COWS - (Church of Western Swing)

Swinging with the COWSI

Henry Baker and the C.O.W.S. Western Swing Band

All the members playing in this band have been inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame. The band name originated from The Church of Western Swing in Turkey, TX, the home of Bob Wills.  Many of the Texas Playboys have worked with Henry since 1982, and he started doing the sound for the “Bob Wills Days” in Turkey at that time.  In 1999, Henry bought the 80 year old “Church” & made it into a music theater for Western Swing Music.  This year it was chosen as venue of the year by the Cowtown Society of Western Music.  Hence came the name, “C.O.W.S. Band”.  Musicians that work with the band vary between 6 and 12 members.  Several of the Texas Playboys still appear with this band on occasion. Baker will bring an eight piece band to play for the Saturday evening dance at the Western Spirit Celebration: A Cowboy Gathering at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center on September 18, 2010.  Members of the band will be Henry Baker on bass and vocals, Doris Ann Baker – vocals, Bobby Baker – steel guitar, Bobby Wynne – trumpet and vocals, Bill Gilbert – fiddle and vocals, Wayne Glasson – Piano, Odie James – drums, and Playboy, Walter Lyons on guitar.
